SOLSTICE
***********

SOLSTICE continues to operate normally, collecting solar data on all 
available orbital tracking periods and stellar calibration observations, 
whenever possible.

SUSIM
***********

SUSIM was successfully repowered on October 27.  Since then, it has
gathered its normal solar data without apparent problems.

The SUSIM team would like to thank Barbara Holt for her diligent and
kindly efforts on behalf of the UARS project.  We will miss her.

PEM
***********

Nothing received.

HALOE 
***********

HALOE was successfully operating when is was powered off end-of-day October
30, 1997.  All engineering parameters were within nominal operating range
and the science data products continue to be of excellent quality.

MLS
***********

MLS was reactivated successfully on Oct 20, in the reduced 85 watt power
mode.  Full vertical scans were performed Oct 21 thru Oct 25. MLS was powered
off on Oct 25 at 23:12 UT.  MLS is scheduled to resume south viewing
operations on Oct 31.
 
Software for producing the new MLS upper tropospheric humidity product has
been delivered to the CDHF, and is now undergoing final tests before being
put into production.  Humidity is retrieved at UARS pressure surfaces of 147,
215, 316 and 464 hPa.

HRDI
***********

HRDI is functioning normally, and is planned to be in operation thru the 
end of Oct. 30.

WINDII
***********

WINDII is currently off. Initiation of the production under our
new Version 5 has been delayed by a number of details that have 
required attention, but nearly all have been resolved now, and
implementation is expected within a few weeks.

MPG
***********

Routine processing of instrument Daily Activity Plans continues
with no problems.  The MPG continues to assist the Project
Scientist with the scheduling of instrument operations.

Personnel change:   Barb Holt is leaving the UARS Mission 
Planning Group to move to a position with Applied Physics 
Laboratory.

CDHF
***********

The CDHF received 339 CD-ROM requests as of 31-October-1997. 
Two new CD-ROM orders were received this week.
    
The CDHF has completed the reprocessing of Extracted Attitude to generate
new SSPP files.
                                    
The CDHF processed current day data through level 3 for all active
   instruments. Additionally, CDHF personnel reprocessed: (R)= Requested
   (C) = Complete, (F)= Failed  (L) = Days remaining to reprocess.

The CDHF has completed the preview and load of August 1997 current day
data to the DAAC.

REPORTING PERIOD

This report covers the 17 October 1997 (Orbit 33338, GMT Day 290).through 24 
October 1997 (Orbit 33443, GMT Day 298).


SPACECRAFT OPERATION

The observatory is now in Forward Flight (Southern Hemisphere viewing) and is 
performing nominally under two-battery operations.  The instrument operational 
changes were:

The beta angle reached a maximum angle of 46 degrees on 21 October 1997 (DOY 
294).  The beta angle is now decreasing toward a minimum angle of 0 degrees on 
07 November 1997 (DOY 311).

Spacecraft battery 1, 2, and 3 performance monitoring continues. Battery 1 
remains OFF the charge relay.  Battery 2 and Battery 3 are currently 
maintaining greater than 24.5 end-of-night (EON) load bus voltage.  Battery 
temperatures are stable with a temperature delta between Battery 2 and Battery 
3 of 1.1 degrees C.  Additional battery performance data for each battery on 18 
October 1997 and 24 October 1997 are provided in Appendix D.


The clock error ranged from -10.2 to +11.5 msec during this report period.  
Clock rate adjustments are listed in Appendix C.

All instrument and subsystem engineers were advised on the initial excursion of 
ALERTS or Out-Of-Limits conditions detected by the FOT for this report.  A 
summary is listed below and the details of ALERT and Out-Of-Limits occurrences 
are listed in Appendix B.

GROUND SYSTEM OPERATION

Three (3) operational support problem(s) occurred this period. Anomaly Reports 
are included in Appendix E.

The data loss calculations supplied by Data Capture Facility (DCF) from mission 
start through UTC Day 97/296 show the observatory data loss to be 20 hours, 41 
minutes, 03.981 seconds (an increase of 5 minutes and 40.256 seconds).  This is 
a 0.0388 percent data loss which equals a 99.9612 percent data capture for the 
mission.


The increase of 1.216 seconds occurred over four (4) days:

%	1.504 seconds on Day 290 due to insufficient overlap,
%	1 minute and 42.752 seconds on Day 291 due to insufficient overlap and
         an unknown reason,
%	3 minutes and 48.192 seconds on Day 292 due to White Sands fail-over,
        and
%	7.808 seconds on Day 294 due to data not recorded.

FOT level-0 processing software was tested on the Central Data Handling 
Facility (CDHF) using files generated by the new Level Zero (LZPR).  The LZPR 
files were processed successfully.

Verified functionality of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) options on the UMPG 
Alpha computer following the installation of Multinet software.  The only 
remaining problem with the UMPG Alpha is the unavailability of Tektronix print 
support (license pending).  Once the Tektronix print driver is installed, the 
UMPG Alpha (node UMPGAL) will replace UMPG0 (the existing UMPG VAX node) as 
the operational machine.

No testing of the new CMS software release (R7B1V2) occurred this week.  The 
FOT currently does not have a workstation hooked up to the back-up UCMS system 
(UCMSB), where the new software currently resides in a test environment.

FOT investigated the status of the conversion device(s) (CD) located in MSOCC 
operations area.  Apparently, there are some problems with the CDs processing 
GCMR(s) together with telemetry but UARS can still use them to test receipt of 
return link telemetry.  However, since the FOT is currently operating out of 
the temporary control center, it may be difficult to configure a parallel test 
which would require extra terminals connected to the AP system that will 
receive the IP data.

Investigation of the stored command verification problem - time to complete - 
associated with Applications Processor (AP) software release 10.08 continued.  
The cause has been identified but rectifying the problem continues.

Repercussions of relocating the UCMS and the UCMSB from one side of the control 
center to the other continued this week.  Apparently during the relocation, the 
lines which connect each system to the CDHF were inadvertently reversed, and 
the line which was previously connected to UCMSB became connected to the UCMS 
(and vice versa).  This in itself is not a problem except for the fact that the 
old UCMSB line is apparently RflakyS and works intermittently.  After the line 
problem was noticed, the hardware maintenance personnel and the CMS system 
managers restored the lines to their original configuration.


OTHER SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

Monitoring of the magnetic field model performance continues.  First, second 
and third order magnetic field models were generated using MATLAB software.  
With the graphic capabilities of MATLAB, the progression of the spherical 
harmonic equations are more easily seen.

Procedures were developed to install new flight software patch (revision V62B) 
to support proper skew wheel speed reversal following the next yaw maneuver.  
Attempts to test the procedure with the UTTS were unsuccessful due to hardware 
problems (with the UTTS CDHF rack and the NASCOM line drivers).

The task to provide documentation and related information about the UARS CDHF 
plot software was completed and released in UARS FOT MEMO 97-040, 97-041, and 
97-042.

FOT continues to develop an updated Power Profile for UARS due to the current 
status of the Modular Power System.

FOT continues to support the new UARS ground system re-engineering effort.  The 
FOT is currently working on providing a floppy disk copy of the current UARS 
database in ASCII format.  Apparently, the database cannot be easily downloaded 
in an ASCII format from the OBCSTF, so the FOT is working on converting the 
necessary files using other sources.


MEETINGS

No UARS Battery telecon was held this week.  The next telecon has not been 
scheduled.



FUTURE SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

The next UARS Yaw Around Maneuver is currently scheduled for 07 November 1997 
at 311/132708.

The UARS orbit altitude is dropping slowly and a drag makeup orbit adjust will 
probably be required in mid-1998.


FACILITIES

The carpet in the UARS/TOMS Mission Operations Room (MOR) has been replaced and 
the new semi-circular console is in place.  Operations continue from a 
dedicated room in the EOS area which is across the hall.


PERSONNEL CHANGES

Rich Calvin, Off-Line Observatory Engineer, submitted his registration 
effective 03 November 1997 to accept a position with Motorola.
